According to reviews on the net the new mid range ATi has a physical cut down in pixel pipelines from 8 to 4 and a cut in vertex shader units from 4 to 2. Therefore its predicessor the 9500PRO is theoretically faster. Most of the benchmarks show the drop in performance as well. It becomes significant when Anisotropic Filtering and Anti Aliasing are used. So if you are aiming for the ATi mid-range at the moment go for the 9500PRO over the 9600PRO wherever possible!

if you are in overclocking it still might be worth looking at.

just a quote from [H]ardocp

"Conclusion

It is our opinion that the Radeon 9600 Pro will be the best value in its price range when it soon becomes available. However, it is not until we raise the frequencies that we see the card's true potential. With the simple adjusting of a slider within the modified driver panel, the ATI 9600 Pro is transformed into a new card which has more than enough headroom for enhanced image quality settings and higher resolutions. Granted, we do not know yet if the retail card will overclock as well as the sample card we were provided with by ATI. Be advised that not all cards will overclock to the same levels. However, should the retail cards overclock anywhere near as well as our sample, users will still witness a healthy jump in performance across the board. We truly do not think that we were given a "cherry picked" 9600 Pro that will not represent the retail product. For ATI to do that at this point in the game would simply be counter productive.

In the conclusion of this card's review, we mentioned our belief that the Radeon 9500 Pro was the best bargain available at this time. However, now that we are armed with this new information, it seems impossible not to recommend the Radeon 9600 Pro as well. When overclocked, the Radeon 9600 Pro can do everything the Radeon 9500 Pro can do...of course the 9500 Pro has been a very good OCer as well.

We have just seen that in some cases, an overclocked 9600 Pro can even challenge a 9700 Pro with positive results. Those who are looking forward to next generation games will do well to take notice of this card's scores in Splinter Cell. Should this title be any indication of the next crop of games ( which it likely is ), the Radeon 9600 Pro will be the highest performing solution available in this price range. Equipped with the speed, image quality, and excellent overclocking ability, the Radeon 9600 Pro has proven to be an exceptional graphics card."
